Christ Is the Answer: The Christ-Centered Teaching of Pope John Paul II
Published in Paperback by Alba House (August, 1995)
Author: John Saward
Average review score:

Great book on the Pope's theology!
I find it very funny that the dope from Minn, ripped apart the book while giving a 5 star rating. Stupid is as stupid does.

When will we be affirmed?
I am an upper middle-class Catholic who works with educated people in a university setting who is very disappointed by the way the Church responds to the demands of my fellow citizens for a Church that affirms and nurtures them toward a more enlightened understanding of what it means to be an empowered Christian who liberates others from the bonds of poverty, AIDS, unemployment, disabilities, etc. We need a Pope who is capable of making something more of his time and our with the platitudes that are contained in this book. There is nothing that touches us, so cold and unfeeling it is in its approach to the historical Jesus who, after all, is more like us than we can ever imagine. If other women, especially women like Mary Daly, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Starhawk, Madonna Kolbenschlag, Joan Chittister -- the true intellectuals of the Church (along with Thomas Merton and Thomas Moore -- see his work on sexuality!)our children would be the beneficiaries of the next renaissance and not His Holiness's high handed attitude.

Color by Design: Planting the Contemporary Garden
Published in Hardcover by Visible Ink Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Nori Pope, Penelope Hobhouse, and Sandra Pope
Average review score:

A must
Color by design is the best book on the subject I have read. A different and complex approach on using color and its effect on the human eye, mind and spirit.

A great inspiration.
An innovative and creative approach to designing with colour. The use of Clive Nichol's stunning photos of Hadspen Garden combine perfectly with the witty and informative text of Nori and Sandra Pope, who are also the gardeners at Hadspen. The publishers are to be congratulated for producing a book that will change the direction of garden book design.

Crossing the Threshold of Love: A New Vision of Marriage
Published in Textbook Binding by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (01 April, 1999)
Author: Mary Shivanandan
Average review score:

The Truth About Love & Marriage
My wife and I read this book as we prepared for marriage, and it's the best book we've read on the subject. Though we are not Catholics, we recognize the beautiful truths of Pope John Paul II's vision of divine and human love. Crossing the Threshold of Love descibes marriage in its fullness--as God intended it. Any book on marriage that ignores such fundamental issues as fertility cycles and contraception is not worth your time. Mary Shivanandan is an honest, informed, and trustworthy guide in these matters. Though not an easy read, it is well worth the effort.

Readable, penetrating, beautiful work
This book is stunning. How beautiful is God's gift of our body, I realized after reading it. This world proclaims that the human body is made for gratification and manipulation, but we know deep down there has to be more. Pope John Paul II has given the defining answer through his writings on the theology of the body. Sadly, many of us have not heard it or cannot comprehend it. This book by Dr. Shivanandan clearly and concisely elucidates the reader on the mind of this Pope. In Crossing the Threshold of Love, the layperson can see the link from the creation of man, of men and women, in God's image to day-to-day relationships with others.

Married couples, single persons, parents, priests, seminarians, teachers -- all can peel away years of misunderstanding the true theology of the body with their read of this book. So much of life's beauty is revealed. A profound sense of serenity with one's sexuality can be the result.

It is not for wimps, though. It took time to read and upon reflection to appreciate this work. It is more than worth the effort.

Crossing the Threshold of Love will remain a timeless resource for meditation and for improving relations with one another.

THANKS FOR THE "A" MYRNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I bought "Exploring Medical Language" I knew absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing about Medical Terminology.
And to tell you the truth, when I first opened this huge, intimidating, monster of a book, It scared... me... I mean, wouldn't "rhabdomyosarcoma" or "esophagogastroduodenoscopy"
frighten you (just a bit) I thought, nooooo way.

But I opened it, read it, did the cool excersises, listen the the audio tapes, played a bit with the CD-R.

She begins at the beginning.....Little baby steps.

All of a sudden... I was like, I get it! I really get it!
Not only that, but I was beginning to enjoy it.

The prefix, suffix, and word roots suddenely become beautiful, flowing words that make sense.
Myrna LaFleur Brooks made this book come alive, interesting, and allowed medical language to become a little bit like music.
Well, a little!!!! Thanx for the "A" Myrna!

This text is invaluable
I'm currently using this book as a supplemental text for my paramedic training. We've just finished cardiology, and I couldn't have done it without this text. I already owned Phalen, Dubin, and Huff; all are good, but the Huszar text is now the one I go to first when I have a question about ECG's. There are a multitude of practical illustrations, tables, and review questions. Best of all is the 200-and-some strips for practice in the appendix. Highly recommend!!

DK Pockets: Sharks

Authors: Joyce Pope and Dorling Kindersley Publishing
Average review score:

Perfect size for little hands/curious mind....
This book is perfect for my Four-year-old future marine biologist/shark enthusiast. Kudos to Joyce Pope for catering to Americas absorbing minds. My Son is so fascinated with sharks and already has a plethora of facts engrained in his memory but this book shares a few speerings on his favorite predators that he did not know. In his hunger for lore he concentrates harder on the fundamentals of reading grasping the whole concept easier. If you have a child that displays signals that reading and words may not be their forte I highly recommend getting Joyce Popes books subjecting the childs line of interests.
In short the books serve MANY purposes....encourages reading, teaches information, acclimates an only child to self-entertainment and (my favorite) occupies the childs time so Mom can focus on HER tasks!

A excallent fact book for future marine biologists
This leave people is such a good mood not only is it excallent but easy to understand

Hear: Solutions, Skills, and Sources for People With Hearing Loss
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (April, 1997)
Author: Anne Pope
Average review score:

absolutely excellent because it's practical, useful
I suffer from a partial hearing loss due to gunfire in the Vietnam War. This book helped me realize I was crazy to pretend I didn't have a problem. Now instead of enduring the pain when the subway noise gets too intense, I simply stop my ears. Anne Pope got me over the embarrassment barrier. She also provided a reassurance for which I'm grateful. Even if my hearing loss gets worse I'll be able to cope with it. She has a fluent, simple, direct writing style. Even when the subject is the science of hearing and hearing loss, she makes it all clear. A fine book by a woman who has coped with hearing loss herself. She knows her subject and how to help her readers.

Great book for hard of hearing people and their families
This clear and encouraging book is ideal for people who have a hard-of-hearing family members. It covers every aspect of hearing loss and offers practical advice on how to deal with it. It is particularly good in dealing with the emotional impact of hearing loss---your own, or that of a loved one. It really gave me and my husband a lot of ideas about how to cope with his problem. I would recommend it to anyone.

High-Speed Wind Tunnel Testing
Published in Hardcover by Krieger Publishing Company (June, 1978)
Authors: Alan Pope and Kenneth L. Goin
Average review score:

Standard reference for high-speed tunnel design
This book is an excellent standard reference for the design of
transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic wind tunnels. Was often used in the design of the Mach-4 and Mach-6 Ludwieg tubes at Purdue University, 1990-2001. Although it is dated, it is the only comprehensive monograph. See also "Experimental Methods of Hypersonics" by Lukasiewicz, which contains less design info.
A great deal of facility construction went on before the publication date of 1965, and not all that many facilities have been built since.

Best book in its class...
This is by far the best book in its class. Being an aerospace engineer, I have known this excellent book for a long time. Yet, I have not fully realized how valuable information it had until recently: My job requires conducting experiments in high-speed facilities, and recently we were converting a Mach 5 facility into a Mach 2. This is not a simple process by any means. During this process we had to solve several issues and this book was one excellent source not only from a theoretical standpoint but also from a practical one. You can feel the valuable experience of the authors all along. If you are into experimental aerodynamics, this book is a must-have book. Period. I strongly recommend it.

John Paul Ii : A Tribute in Words and Pictures
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (September, 1999)
Author: Monsignor Virgil Levi
Average review score:

I Wonderful Book.
Finally, a book about His Holiness that is full of pictures, but also full of Papal info. If you're a Roman Catholic or a fan of the Supreme Pontiff, this is a must buy.

A Little of Everything
I loved this book about John Paul II (the Pope of Hope)!!! The authors gave us a little of everything, not an easy task for a man with so much history behind him. This is the first book where I have gone over pages more than once, twice. I wanted to absorb every word, every picture. The side stories were also a special treat. I respect and admire the pope even more. I now feel well prepared to read George Weigel's recently published autobiography on JPII, Witness to Hope. Thank you Monsignor Virgilio Levi and Christine Allison for giving us something so inspiring.

Favorite Norse Myths
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (February, 1996)
Authors: Mary Pope Osborne and Troy Howell
Average review score:

Okay
This is more like Norse Myths for Dummies. It doesn't go into great detail, but it tells you enough of the myths so you know what's going on.

It is more for the youger groups or people who want to know the basics of Norse myths. If you're looking to do a report or to become a Norse guru, I wouldn't recommend this book.

Excellent
Mary Pope Osborne is the author of the Magic Tree House series of kids books. She tells a good story.

I learned next to nothing about Norse myths when I was a kid. My Swedish American husband checked this book out of the library to read to our 5 y.o. daughter. It was over her head then (7 y.o. is probably more appropriate), but hubby and I really enjoyed it. We've checked it out numerous times since, and probably should just buy it already! It's a fun referrence book.

Most true to actual Norse Myths.
As an advocate for pure mythology, I am pleased to say that this book is an excellent piece of historical literature. Many stories tend to stray away or add to the original writings of myths, but not this one. It goes without saying that the authors of this book did their homework and researched the actual tales. The art is magnificant, and really adds to the quality of the work. If you have children who are tired of the repeated Greek Classics, then I highly recommend this twist on the myths. I think they will appreaciate the change. Remember, this is not some watered down piece of work, this is as close, in chidren's books, to the true nature of Norse Myth as you will find. An excellent piece of work
